The escalating violence has prompted the United Nations to begin the evacuation of its staff in Egypt, while foreign governments continue to airlift their nationals out of the country. The exodus has increased the number of flights from Cairo. Nearly 300 UN staff and their families were airlifted out of Egypt to their new temporary home of Cyprus. The world body's long presence on the island led it to it being deemed a safe location. Rolando Gomez, spokesman UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, said, "We've just received about 150 UN staff members and their families from Egypt who were relocated here, temporarily relocated here due to the security situation in Egypt. The first of four planes scheduled to arrive here in Larnaca Airport just arrived with about 150 passengers on board." Although anti-government protests throughout Egypt are now in their second week, the increasingly violent nature of recent clashes between rival groups of demonstrators has forced the UN into its decision to relocate.
