Family Holidays in Cyprus

If you are looking for a great location for a family holiday then look no further than the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. With its golden sandy beaches, this is the perfect place to catch some summer sun.

The rise of the budget airlines has seen a substantial decrease in the cost of flying to Cyprus too. You can fly from the UK and much of mainland Europe to one of the main Cyprus airports for considerably less than was the case just a few years ago.

Once on the island, you'll find that many of the resorts are set up specifically to accommodate family holidays. Many hotels will serve children's portions of meals, for example, while most holiday companies on the island also provide activities so that your children can head off and have some fun while you relax on the beach or by the pool.

It's not uncommon for the larger pools to have separate children's swimming pools and paddling pools, with shallower water to ensure that children can play safely.

The beaches of Cyprus are well known, providing the perfect opportunity for beach games, building sand castles and plenty more fun activities.

There are also opportunities for horse riding, swimming and water sports - boating and kayaking are both very popular.

The theme parks at Ayia Napa provide good value for money, with the water park being a particular favourite with many kids.

In the evenings, if you choose not to eat in your hotel then you will still find a large number of restaurants that are happy to welcome families. In fact, Cypriots are very sociable people and are also very keen on family activities, so meals out always tend to lead to a large social event.

You'll also find that, whichever part of the island you choose to stay at, the local people are warm and welcoming towards you and your family.

Cyprus is a fantastic location for a family holiday, combining plenty of activities with some great weather.

Gold - Ghana's Most Treasured Possession

Ghana has seen much of highs and lows on journey to becoming The Republic of Ghana from Wagadugu. History lovers really need to grab a cheap flight to Accra. The history of Ghana dates back to the medieval times of 4th century to the 13th century.

It was during those times that Ghana earned its wealth from gold and trade. Through this culture, Wagadugu developed the capital city of Kumbi Saleh, which became the hub of trade in West Africa. Later, another commercial hub, namely Audaghust, came into being.

According to historians, ancient Ghana is located 500 miles north of where Ghana is located today. It was not until the 12th century that a great famine broke out in the country and that is where the fall of Ghana's gold mining started. This time also saw a great loss in livestock population.

Adding to this famine, the increasing influence and intervention of Muslims from Northern Africa is considered a reason for Ghana's fall. The leniency of the King is also blamed. The matter of Islamic intervention, however, is not very authentic according to written history. In addition, the King's inspiration from Islamic trading is believed to have made him loose his trading ethics, automatically bringing Muslims into power. A ray of hope of Ghana gaining back its old status was seen when, in the 11th and 12th centuries, new gold mines were discovered outside of Kumbi Saleh and Audaghust. Unluckily, this excavation rather became a reason for fights over Ghana until it was finally conquered by the great Mali Empire.

In the 15th century, Europeans started entering Ghana, the Portuguese being the first. In 1481, the Portuguese and in 1598, the Dutch built their forts in Ghana which were designed to conduct gold, ivory and slave trade. The Portuguese could not carry this on for very long when in 1637, the Dutch captured their castle. By the 18th century, the coastal areas of Ghana had been filled with British, Dutch and Swede castles. Astounded by the richness of its gold mines, the British named Ghana, Gold Coast while the ornaments worn by the locals made French to call it The Ivory Coast (la Cote d'Ivore). Gradually, all the European conquerors withdrew leaving behind Ghana in the hands of British.

Disagreements broke out between different groups and tribes of Ghana with the British. The Ghanaians saw their interests and traditions being sidelined under the British rule. The people of Ghana felt lack of political freedom and high ignorance by the rulers. No effective health and education policies were made by the British, their behavior was rude and discrimination between skin color lead to racism against the locals. The locals were not paid well and even the British, who were working under some local, considered themselves superior to their bosses. The British hostility led to an uproar amongst the Ghanaians. Pan-African conscience aroused which was nurtured by leaders from Nigeria and Sierra Leone. Finally, a Ghanaian political party named as United Gold Coast Conversion (UGCC) was formed by Dr J.B. Danquah in 1947. Other leadership of the party included George Grant, Akuffo Addo, William Ofori Atta, Obetsebi Lamptey, Ako Agyei, and J Tsiboe. Fights for the rights started. India-Pakistan independence further energized the feelings of locals. Finally, on 6 March 1957, Gold Coast was set independent by the British and Ghana emerged on the world map as an independent state.

Greece and Cyprus Ranked As Cheap Holiday Destinations

Greece and Cyprus earned a reputation of cheap holiday destinations for UK holidaymakers decades ago. Booking a package holiday to Greece or Cyprus is often the smartest and most cost effective way of gaining some valuable time off in the sunshine. Greece offers inexpensive packages based on self-catering accommodation, bed and breakfast hotels, as well as value luxury accommodation in all inclusive holiday complexes or boutique style properties. Both Greek mainland and the islands are associated with long hours of sunshine, thus making for equally long summer holiday season, usually starting in May and finishing in late October. Cyprus, on the other hand welcomes year-round visitors with its hot summers and mild winters. For many, it has become a place for long-stay holidays, even a second home.

Whether you are staying in your own holiday home or your accommodation is part of your holiday package inclusive of flights and airport transfers, there are usually other expenses associated with your stay in Greece or Cyprus. These can be anything from car rental to excursions, entertainment, meals and drinks or food purchased outside your holiday complex. Although these two countries have been labelled as 'expensive' after entering the Eurozone and the euro currency, current research based on consumer demands to show more transparency in the general cost of holidays shows that both Greece and Cyprus are actually ranked amongst the cheapest holiday destinations when it comes to the actual package holiday cost, as well as all associated expenses. Surprisingly enough, Greece is at the moment cheaper than Turkey, often perceived as the most economical holiday destination.

Usually holidays booked outside high season tend to be cheaper as opposed to travel during the peak months of July, August or late December. Holidays to Greece and Cyprus are no exception, therefore planning your trip in less busy time can benefit with even more holiday bargains. Greece and Cyprus are also ideal last-minute destinations when the tour operators and their local business partners tend to release the flight seats and last available rooms for a quick sale at bargain prices. Current unfavourable economic climate in Greece also means that the local hoteliers, transportation companies, restaurant and tourist facility owners have slashed their prices to a minimum to draw more visitors this year. This makes Greece even more attractive on the package holiday market.

When comparing the two destinations, current research shows that based on average cost of a holiday, Cyprus is slightly cheaper than Greece. The island boasts great accommodation capacities and fantastic beaches both on its southern and northern, the less commercialised coastline. Overall, both destinations provide enough attractions and beaches to satisfy every taste and budget and are traditionally a great option for all types of holidaymaker - the young and lively as well as families with children and the more mature customers. Choosing to holiday in Greece and Cyprus this year could mean enjoying a quality holiday for less money.

Israeli tourism to Turkey plummets

The storming of the Gaza Flotilla, led to feelings of uncertainty and the repercussions continue to ripple. Israeli tourist brokers have announced an almost total freeze in tourists planning trips to Turkey. Even in Turkey Israelis holidaying there fearing terrorist attacks have cancelled tours and excursions, returning to hotels and awaiting flights home. Turkey has been a favoured tourist destination for Israelis. According to statistics from the Airports Authority, in 2008, 530000 Israelis visited Turkey, in 2009 that number was 300000 but this year it will fall to barely a few thousand. That will lead to a fall in over $200m to the Turkish economy. Israelis will now have the choice of either staying at home or maybe visiting similar nearby Medierranena destininations such as Cyprus or Rhodes?

Madrid - A Night Owl's Paradise

The handle "The city that never sleeps" officially belongs to New York City; however visitors returning from a trip to Madrid may beg to differ. Madrid can however be considered the night club capital of Europe. This being a city whose local government just put into place a cap that will limit the opening of new bars in the city. Now who can argue with that?

If you have never traveled to Madrid, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind when going out for the evening. The first thing to remember is that Madrid restaurants and cafes don't normally open until later in the evening than most people, particularly American's, aren't used to. Expect most restaurants to open around 7pm at the earliest, some not even until 10pm.

Another thing to keep in mind is that local Madrid residents (Madrilenos) will party all night long, with some clubs staying open until 5 or 6 a.m. But don't make the mistake of thinking that they are trying to put back as many drinks as they can all night. Madrilenos have perfected the art of making a beverage last, longer than most American's would be used to. In Madrid, the locals are after quality, not quantity unlike some cultures. The key to a fun night out in Madrid is to remember that it is a marathon, not a sprint.

Madrid is a place that can cater its nightlife to anybody's style, no matter what that style might be. From the budget minded backpacker to the extravagantly wealthy jetsetter, Madrid will have a bar or club right up your alley. The default area of the city for nightlife is the Puerto del Sol area which is directly in the center of Madrid. This area is filled with large department stores, smaller retail stores and boutiques, endless restaurants and cafes, and one of the more famous symbols of Spain and the El Oso y El Madrano, the statue of the bear eating from a strawberry tree. Here you will find Irish styled pubs, trendy clubs playing pop music, tourists as well as locals looking to interact with the tourists.

For those looking for something a little more upscale, than the area for you has to be Salamanca. This is where the wealthy come to gather and it is evident upon entrance to any of the numerous bars and clubs. It isn't uncommon to see somebody of celebrity status gallivanting in this area of town.

Another popular area of Madrid is Chueca, an area that was once the notorious center for the queer scene of Madrid. While a part of that is still true, you will still find plenty of people of all origins. This area is a little more high-class than Salamanca and caters to those who are not afraid to flash their wallet.

If you are not sure what your style is, no need to worry. When in doubt, just follow the crowds and see where they are going as there is always guaranteed to be a large crowd looking for a good time, especially on the weekends.

In land, behind the rocky mountain range and the imposing Five Finger Mountain you will find the huge fertile Mesaoria plain. From here you reach Ercan airport and the island's capital city of Nicosia or Lefkosa.

If you journey further along the east coast you will find the ancient fortified city of Famagusta or Gazimagosa and close by the ruins of Salamis. Corporate Coach Hire - The Fast and Comfortable Way to Move Your Staff Or Crew

Hundreds of companies all over the country are starting to realise that one of the most convenient ways of transporting their staff between venues is by coach. Corporate coach hire has seen an explosive growth in recent years and when you consider the advantages that it offers, its really not hard to see why. Traditionally, many companies have simply used airlines or even taxis to ferry personnel from one location to another and while its true that these forms of transport are sometimes suitable for smaller scale staff movements, they are often much costlier in terms of time and money spent than they might at first appear.

Take air transport as an example. First of all you have to cover the cost of transporting your staff to and from the airport. This may involve reimbursing them for the cost of their car's mileage incurred or paying train fares. Then you have airport parking fees, and possibly a congestion charge if you are moving them into Central London for example. Add to this the time you need to allow for security check in and waiting to pick up bags at the other end and the costs in terms of both time and money soon start to mount up. The cost of your average business class airline seat is now significant and sometimes seats are overbooked or flights delayed. All in all, moving staff around by air is a fairly unpleasant experience compared to the same journey by coach and should only really be done if the distances involved are significant.

If you haven't used corporate coach hire in the past few years then you might well be in for a big surprise. The days of old fashioned, dirty, smelly and run down coaches are long gone. Today's corporate coaches have every luxury that you could imagine including plasma tv's to watch movies on, and even wi-fi connectivity for internet on the move. Most good services offer comfortable reclining seats, air conditioning and even hostess service as standard. These services are also extremely flexible as they can depart when it suits you, they can pick you up and drop you off right from your front door to your destination and, of course they can make stops and detours to suit if necessary. All in all, its difficult to come up with a reason why you would want to consider air travel as an alternative.

Don't forget, you can also move your entire crew or staff for a fraction of the cost of transporting the same number of people by air. Finally, for the ultimate in convenience, many corporate coach hire packages can be booked online and you can specify your exact requirements without the need to even visit the companies premises, let alone stand in line and make a booking at a ticket desk.

Common Sense Safety Tips When Traveling

The one thing that many backpackers or travelers-on-a-budget in Thailand don't know about is that Thailand is actually a remarkably safe place to travel. Granted, if you 'tempt fate' with your gear or get casual about leaving stuff lying around, then you may end up attracting your fair share of nefarious types before you know it.

So, in order that you keep safe and keep secure, here's a few little things you can do. After all, having a bad experience can easily put a downer on your holiday, so it's best to avoid those experiences at all costs.

The first thing you should do, apart from the common sense of 'looking after your gear and valuables' as you would on a normal overseas trip, is wear a hidden passport money case or travel pouch. Now, you may feel that you don't need one of these. But they do come in handy to keep your passport, credit cards and valuables together and safe.

Next on the list is having a good bag or backpack lock. You can purchase great combination locks that will lock or fasten your backpack to a fixed object if time ever calls for that. Sometimes just zipping up your bag is enough -- you really don't need to be ultra-paranoid about safety in Thailand, but it's good to be secure all the same.

And lastly, make sure you know who you're traveling with. Sure, most of the time it's going to be your travel mates, friends or backpackers from back home. But just keep your wits about you when traveling to unfamiliar areas or locations, or particularly 'touristy' areas. Knowing how to 'read' body language will do you well too.

Well, that's it in a nutshell. Like I say, you can relax and enjoy your Thailand adventure without having to worry about safety because it's really not an issue in Thailand. Just focus on the good things and enjoy your trip!

Budapest - A True Jewel in the East

Hungary's vibrant capital, Budapest, is brimming with cultural and leisure attractions. Straddling the river Danube and set against a backdrop of natural beauty and stunning architecture, it's the perfect spot for a fun-filled family holiday or a romantic getaway. And when you get tired of sightseeing, you can relax and revive yourself in one of its healing thermal baths and natural spas.

For a family

You'll find plenty of choices for young children and teenagers. Here's our pick of what will keep you and your family busy.

Magical memories

Children and adults will adore the marionette and puppet shows at the Budapest Puppet Theatre. The performances, based on popular fables and fairy tales, are in Hungarian, but the kids will still be spellbound. There are occasional evening folk performances for grown ups, too.

Scenic route

Thomas the Tank Engine fans will love chugging through the leafy green hills high above the city onboard the Children's Railway. The 11km narrow gauge line was constructed by socialist Scouts and is still staffed almost entirely by schoolchildren. Older trains, including two amazing steam engines, run most weekends.

Island oasis

If the kids have any energy left, Margaret Island - a lush, traffic-free park in the middle of the Danube - has plenty to entertain them. Medieval ruins, a small zoo, a game reserve, a music fountain and swimming pools are just some of the attractions you'll find here. Pedal-pushing families can hire bikes or hire a Bringohinto, a large pedal-powered carriage that will accommodate everyone. And when it comes to refueling, take advantage of the local prices, a can of coke will cost you about 50p.

For couples

If the weather's good, exploring Budapest on foot and sampling the outdoor cafe culture will be a holiday highlight in itself. The city is full of breathtaking buildings, parks, castles, palaces and bridges (there are nine crisscrossing the Danube), many of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Historic charm

Cross the Chain Bridge - Budapest's oldest bridge - and you arrive in the Castle District - a real-life fantasy of crooked streets leading to the fairy tale Buda Castle. The Fisherman's Bastion with white-stone turrets, parapets and climbing stairways offers a fabulous view over the city and nearby is Matthias Church, with its psychedelic contrasting mosaic roof. If walking isn't your thing, but you still want to explore the sights, hop-on-hop-off bus tours run daily.

Sweet stop

When your sugar levels drop, make a beeline for one of Budapest's elegant pâtisseries. Look out for dobos torta, a layered chocolate and cream cake and beigli, a rolled pastry filled with poppy seeds, ground walnuts and apricot - and always ask for two forks! For a classic treat, head to the city's oldest coffee house, Ruszwurm, in the Castle District and indulge yourself with an afternoon tea.

River views

One of the best ways to see this regal city is by boat. Legenda cruises operate day and evening trips along the Danube with panoramic views, soft drinks, bubbly and multi-lingual tour guides. Tickets start at about £12 for a day cruise and £16 for an evening cruise. For true romantics, the candlelit dinner cruise is just the thing.

Spa time

Over 100 natural thermal springs surface in Budapest, making it a haven for spa lovers. The warm healing waters have been a constant attraction from antiquity to present day and are great for anyone wanting to cure an old back ache or simply relax. If you're looking for somewhere to spa and sleep, the Danubius Health Spa Resort, on peaceful Margaret Island, is the ideal destination for all. Just 10 minutes from the city centre, this green oasis is the perfect getaway.

Spend your days between the outdoor sun-bathed pool and indoor thermal baths filled with mineral-rich healing waters. Adults can enjoy a variety of beauty treatments, from relaxing facials to wellness treatments including a tranquil salt cave. Kids have everything they need to keep busy from tennis courts, rowing boats and bicycles to pools and lidos.

Getting there

Malev Hungarian Airlines fly to Budapest from London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Return flights from London start from £90.

The local currency is the Hungarian forint, and it's around 290 forints to the pound.

Where To Visit In France - Corsica

Corsica is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily, Sardinia, and Cyprus). It is located west of Italy, southeast of France, and north of the island of Sardinia. Although Corsica is considered part of France, it still has slightly more power than other departments in the country and with some essential differences including its language and culture.

Corsica is made up of two departments: Corse-du-Sud (department number 2A) and Haute-Corse (department number 2B). The region as a whole has a population of 281,000 (approximate in January 2007). Ajaccio is the capital of the region and is located in Corse-du-Sud.

The island has a rich history including hundreds of years of turbulence and foreign rule and it was only in 1768 that Corsica fell into French hands.

Although French is the official language and is spoken by everybody, you will also hear Corsican which is close to Italian spoken everywhere, particularly in the villages.

Corsica is renowned for its charcuterie, including the smoked sausage and the ham made from wild boar. Other traditional foods include Corsican soup with beans, meat and vegetables, small brown trout from the mountain rivers, game - including wild boar; lamb, goat, veal; beans and lentils and pulenta - a chestnut flour porridge. Cheeses are made from sheep's milk and include Brocciu, a soft white cheese as well as more mature cheeses. Deserts and pastries are memorable and include the famous 'fiadona' made with the Brocciu cheese.

Why you should visit Corsica for your next holiday in France

The islands sheer warmth and beauty attracts many tourists each year and the summer months can get quiet busy. Not far from the glitzy and commercialized Riviera, Corsica still remains unspoiled and unchanged over the years, which only makes it more endearing. Over 1000kms of coastline, including 800 beaches are at your fingertips with little coves waiting to be explored. Further inland, the island is more rugged in appearance with fabulous mountains and forest areas.

The seas are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, sailing and windsurfing. If you like walking then the island has everything from easy strolls to challenging mountain treks. There is an intricate network of ancient footpaths and mule paths, criss-crossing the whole island linking valley with valley and making Corsica a walker's paradise. Horse riding is popular on the old mule trails as are canoing and fishing on the rivers and streams.

The climate in Corsica varies greatly depending on the altitude. The wild flowers first appear in February and snow can be seen on the highest mountain tops until late spring. From sea level to about 1500 feet, the climate and vegetation is typically Mediterranean, with hot dry summers and mild winters. Between 1,500 and 4,500 feet, the climate is similar but a little cooler the higher one goes. Above 4,500 feet, an alpine climate prevails, the sun is hot in summer, but the nights are cool, and in winter there is snow from September to May with skiing possible in many places. The island has an average of greater than 2700 hours of sunshine per year and the average sea temperature in the summer is 24 °C.

What to see in Corsica La Balagna, once called 'The Garden of Corsica', is a fertile area of hills and valleys, bounded by the sea to the north and the high mountains to the south. The valleys are covered by olives, vines, fruit and citrus trees. Flocks of milking sheep graze the valleys and their milk is used in the production of Roquefort and local cheeses.

The main town of Calvi - a small port dominated by its ancient citadel, claims to be the birthplace of Christopher Columbus and it was during the siege of Calvi that Nelson lost an eye.

Saint Florent is a small sheltered fishing port with good beaches and a citadel. It is an excellent centre to explore this area as well as the west coast of the Cap. In high season it is possible to take a ferry from Saint Florent to the beaches of the Desert des Agriates.

The drive around Cap Corse is often slow and tortuous, but the stunningly varied scenery is well worth the effort. Monte Stello is the highest point at about 3,000 feet. The best views can be seen driving in an anti clockwise direction down the west coast which gives wonderful views of the mountains of Haute Corse as you drive south with villages like Nonza perched high above the sea. Centuri Port, in the northwest, has a distinctly Cornish air, and serves very good fish and lobster in its restaurants. Macinaggio, on the northeast side, contrasts strongly with Centuri. It has a modern marina providing shelter for many large yachts.

The lush area of Castagniccia, with its soft chestnut-covered hills and deep valleys, was once the richest in Corsica, with its huge crop of chestnuts providing flour. Chestnuts were also used to feed pigs which were processed into sausages and hams. Because of its dense covering of vegetation, this area is always fresh and green, with no lack of water. The contrast between this area and the rest of the island is marked and evidenced in the shape of the land and its architecture. Villages with slate-roofed houses are draped along the sides of the hills. The Castagniccia comes close to the sea at Moriani, and from here to Bastia the villages of the Casinca hang on the mountainside overlooking the oriental plain and the sea.

Dominated by its citadel, Corte was once the capital of the island, and is the seat of Corsica's University. The old town, with its four or five storey houses, is fascinating to explore. Corte is a good base for walkers. There is the Tavignano valley, accessible only by foot; the Gorge of the Restonica, Lac de Melo and Lac de Capitello; and further south Monte d'Oro, the Forest of Vizzavona and the Cascade des Anglais.

The mountainous heart of the island is divided up into many distinctive areas, but the Niolo is perhaps the most dramatic. It is a fertile basin at about 2,700 feet above sea level and ringed by the high mountains of Corsica including Monte Cinto (8,800 feet) and Paglia d'Orba.

The scenery along the west coast from Girolata to Cargese is stunning, with red granite cliffs dropping dramatically into the sea and few accessible beaches. Porto is probably the most photographed beach on the island, and is beautiful. Inland from Porto, the gorge of the Spelunca, a very deeply cut gorge with pink and green sheer granite slides, is one of the most spectacular sights on the island.

The elegant town of Ajaccoi, the birthplace of Napoleon, and capital of the island is reminiscent of the resorts of the Cote d'Azur. The Gulf of Ajaccio is beautiful, culminating on the northern side with the Iles Sanguinaires. To the south there are lovely sandy beaches and a well developed tourist industry with Porticcio being one of the main holiday resorts of the area.

The Gulf of Valinco is beautiful and there are a wealth of sandy beaches from Porto Pollo on its northern tip to the little resort and fishing port of Campo Moro a pretty little village which time has left behind.

Bonifacio is a beautifully restored old town, magnificently situated on its limestone promontory looking out towards the Island of Sardinia. Boat excursions around the limestone cliffs and caves, or to Sardinia, are possible. Just a short drive from Bonifacio are some magnificent beaches and a spectacular golf course.

Porto-Vecchio is situated at the heart of a vast gulf with many beautiful beaches. The town of Porto-Vecchio was built in 1539 to complete the defence system of the island and its fortress origins are evident. Inland there are cork-oak forests. The Ospedale Mountains and the dramatic Col de Bavella are within easy reach of Porto-Vecchio.

How to get there

By Air

Corsica has good air connections to France and most other European countries. There are direct flights from London Gatwick to Corsica with British Airways.

By Car

The fast ferry to Corsica runs from Nice and has a crossing time of about 3 hours. There are also regular ferries from Marseille and Toulon but these take between 7 and 12 hours. The journey to Nice is approximately 1300km from Calais and will take around 11 hours.

One adjoin Fascist Corporatocracy

Sheep News Network One vs Fascist Corporatocracy, where were you? Corporatocracy is a neologism that describes a government dominated by corporate influence, banks, and governments. Corporatocracy is similar conceptually to the term plutocracy. Athens, Greece Europe, EU A general strike shut down Greece on Wednesday, grounding flights, closing banks and schools and restricting hospital services in action that piled pressure on a conservative government hit by the worst riots in decades. "Participation in the strike is total, the country has come to a standstill," said Stathis Anestis, spokesman for the GSEE private sector union federation. The riots quickly spread to at least 10 cities across the European Union member state of 11 million people, including the tourist islands of Crete and Corfu. Greeks also protested in Paris, Berlin, London, The Hague and in Cyprus. What is the EU gonna do now? UN troops? shoot people? ... I'd say that something POSITIVE had better happen fast. Because I know that mosts citizens in the EU are getting pissed off with Corporatocracy that is emulating Democracy.
