It's funny when you start to think back to your childhood holiday memories. You are, of course, generally looking back on a time where things often seemed so much simpler. You may well have had considerably less concerns than you do as an adult. It's often striking just how many positive memories we tend to have of such holidays.
You may remember times spent building sand castles on a beach, or maybe eating an ice cream. It's often such simple pleasures that seem to stay longer in the memory. What's most interesting is that such memories are rarely related to the expense of the holiday. Many parents imagine that they can offer their kids more memorable holidays by spending more money and yet this rarely seems to be the case.
The reality is that many children are more likely to enjoy spending time with family and friends. So is that the secret to a great family holiday? Is it more about the people that you spend time with than about the place where you go, or the new people that you meet. Some would say that all such factors are important and this is probably fair comment. But there's no doubt that few things are better than spending good, quality time as a family.
When you come to book your next holiday, should you completely forget about how much you're going to spend? The reality is that many of us do become concerned about how much money we have to spend and it's natural that we should worry about it. But maybe we should think a bit more about whether a given holiday will allow us to spend more time together as a family.
Perhaps we should be less concerned about whether we've booked the most expensive hotel that we can afford and maybe a little more concerned about what we will do as a family when we arrive at our chosen destination. It looks very much like the people, the culture and the entertainment will leave more of a positive mark on our memories.
